Basic Mechanic
All Guild Wars 2 Thief builds rely on weapon skills that do not use normal recharge times, but instead require initiative. Initiative constantly recharges, and allows the thief to quickly use custom chains of attack skills at the cost of being unable to attack again until initiative has recharged. The thief can also steal, which generates a random environmental weapon depending on the enemy. For example, stealing from an Oakheart will obtain a branch which can be used to attack enemies.
Thief Builds
Cloak and Dagger Vanishing with Critical Backstabs
Weapon Set: Dual Daggers
Focus: Stealth, Critical Damage
About: This Guild Wars 2 Thief build focuses on using dual daggers for the Cloak and Dagger ability and then hitting the enemy from behind using Backstab for critical damage. Vanishing into stealth is a a crucial part of this build since we will be selecting traits that benefit stealth the most. When in stealth you will get 100% critical strike chance, regain initiative and health and also gain vigor. Since we get so many stat boosts from vanishing we will also focus on stealth abilities through our traits as well. One last important part of this build is that you also get a better chance to critically hit when you attack an enemy from the side or behind. Read on for the full detailed description of the build.
Shortbow and Stealing for Support

About: This Thief build was created primarily as a support build which is not that easy for a Thief in Guild Wars 2. We used the Shortbow to help with survivability and focused on support through other means such as stealing, utilities and some special traits. The Thief’s abilities do not provide any boons at first glance but there is a way to provide boons by stealing. Staying alive is always the first priority so stealthing and keeping your distance with the shortbow are necessities. Stealth will also give us some added support for our teammates after choosing our traits. Also, our utilities are geared toward helping our allies really making this the best Thief support build.
Dual Pistols and Daggers with Venomous Crits
Weapon Set: Dual Pistols, Dual Daggers
Focus: Damage, More Damage
About: This is a dual pistol and dual dagger thief build that uses venom for the utility skills. The main focus will be to reduce the healing and defense of the enemy with our conditions and venom while boosting our utilities and critical strike chance with our traits. Having the pistols along with the daggers will allow us to be effective at a distance or up close and personal. This is a very selfish build with little support for your fellow teammates.
